Football website TuttoMercatoWeb have claimed that Liverpool have an ‘agreement’ in place with French side Rennes to sign midfielder Renato Sanches for a fee of £18million – after initially being linked with him last week.

Reports from France claimed that Liverpool were tracking Euro 2016 winner Sanches, 23, last week – ahead of the January transfer window. After a difficult few seasons at Bayern, Sanches has redisocovered his potential at Lille.

A muscle injury has kept him sidelined for the last couple of months, but Le10Sport stated the Reds had identified Sanches as the ideal long-term replacement for Gini Wijnaldum. Now, the latest report claims Liverpool have an agreement in place.

Sanches is said to have agreed an £18million move to Liverpool from Lille in January. It remains to be seen if such a move is about to occur, though the future of Gini Wijnaldum continues to remain up in the air.

TBR’s view – Sanches a good signing, but can Liverpool do better?

His time at Bayern was hardly profitable. He joined the club from Benfica but failed to build on his enormous potential, managing just 53 senior games. A loan move to Swansea, some may remember, was not successful.

Yes, his form at Lille has improved dramatically in what is a French division that is constantly on the up. At £18million, he is cheap and is a similar player to Wijnaldum – but surely the Premier League champions can do better?

A move would make sense, though, especially given TransferMarkt claim he shares the same agent as Diogo Jota and Fabinho.
