Liverpool are in the hunt to sign Argentinian defender Ezequiel Garay but could face competition from Barcelona to sign the experienced star.
The Reds are desperate to bring in defensive cover this January and Garay is one of a number of options identified by Jurgen Klopp to plug the gap left by injuries to Van Dijk and Gomez.
But according to Sport, Spanish giants Barcelona could also through their name in the hat for the 34-year-old free-agent as Ronald Koeman continues to suffer his own squad woes.
Garay, who has 32 caps for Argentina, was last with Valencia but has yet to put pen to paper on a deal anywhere else. He’s formerly been at Real Madrid, Benfica, Santander, and Zenit St Petersburg on the European circuit.
Any contract offer from Liverpool to Garay is likely to be a short-term one until the end of the season given his age.
A good option but nothing more than short-termism from both here – TBR View
Garay’s name has popped up given he is a free agent and within that market, he’s probably the most prized asset in terms of experience and quality.
The Argentine might be a fine addition for a few months but nothing more than that. Ideally, Liverpool bring someone in who can help now and also develop further into the future.
However, needs must sometimes and the Reds, if they do pursue Garay, will hope the lure of Anfield will prove more than the Nou Camp.
