According to a report from Spanish outlet AS, Liverpool could be set to launch a summer move for AZ Alkmaar midfielder, Teun Koopmeiners.
It is claimed Liverpool have identified Koopmeiners as their replacement for the outgoing Gini Wijnaldum, although a number of other clubs are also said to be keen.
The likes of Roma and Sevilla are among the clubs mentioned. Koopmeiners, 23, is already a full Dutch international and is widely regarded as one of the best midfield players in the Dutch leagues. He’s managed an impressive 15 goals and five assists this season, underlining his potential from the middle of the park.
AS say that a bid in the region of £17m could do the trick for Koopmeiners, who has been linked with Leeds United in the past.
The report says ‘specialists’ have compared the Dutchman to Real Madrid star Toni Kroos. That name, of course, rings fresh bells for Liverpool fans following his masterclass in midweek. He is also tipped as a leader, having captained the Netherlands under-21s as well as Alkmaar.
TBR View: Koopmeiners ticks all the boxes for Liverpool
When you look at a new signing, it doesn’t look like Koopmeiners falls short in many ways in terms of what Liverpool need.
He can fill a number of positions in midfield, has an eye for goal, and at less than £20m, won’t break the bank for FSG.
His goals tally is impressive and it’s clear he’s ready to make a step up from Alkmaar. The Reds, then, would be wise to swoop early this summer before the race hots up even further.
