According to fresh reports from Portugal, Liverpool could be given the chance to finally sign Sporting Lisbon youngster, Nuno Mendes, in the summer transfer window.
Mendes has been on the radar of the Reds for some time now. The 18-year-old left-back is clearly one of the best talents on the continent for his age. A number of clubs are said to have watched him, with Leicester and Arsenal among them.
Any move by Liverpool, then, would see them usurp former boss Brendan Rodgers in the race for Mendes. It was claimed in November that Rodgers was eyeing Mendes as a potential long-term replacement for Ben Chilwell.
Lisbon are apparently willing to sell Mendes to ease the financial pressures that the pandemic has brought with it. And the fact they’re willing to transfer list their man, suggests they could accept a lower offer to that of the £66m release clause.
TBR View: Mendes will be brilliant so Liverpool right to be involved here
Liverpool need some sort of rebuild in the summer so adding fresh blood is a good thing. Of course, Mendes is unlikely to move Andy Robertson from his starting slot, but he could put the pressure on.
£66m is a big chunk of change to part ways with for any club. But you get the impression Sporting might accept that little bit less here.
Mendes is already a fine player and given he’s still just 18, he has huge potential. Certainly one to keep an eye on for the Reds.
