Report: Liverpool could sanction deal for Taiwo Awoniyi to stay with Mainz

According to a report from Bild (via Goal), Liverpool and Mainz are in discussions about allowing Taiwo Awoniyi to stay in Germany beyond this season.

The 22-year-old attacker has impressed for the German side of late after a less than brilliant initial few months with the club.

Despite hitting the net just once this term, Awoniyi has started every game since the Bundesliga restarted in May. This is in stark contrast to the months before, where he missed out on the squad regularly or occupied the bench.

And his manager, Rouven Schroder, has spoken of his admiration for Awoniyi, confirming that discussions are ongoing regarding an extended deal.

“I am very, very positive about him,” Schroder told Bild.

“Taiwo never let himself down, always had his head up and the absolute will to improve was never negative. It is a symbol of how team sport works. We are in an exchange with Liverpool, that is an open position. We are now waiting for the last games. Then we’ll see what the next steps are.”

It is believed Jurgen Klopp rates the Nigerian highly. However, finding a place in the Liverpool squad is tough going at the moment, so another loan spell could well make sense.

A huge talent and one to keep an eye on – TBR View

Liverpool fans know little about Awoniyi on the pitch, given he’s spent every season away from the club on loan since he joined. That is, in part, due to work-permit conditions not being met.

However, the return of the Bundesliga and lack of English football has given Reds fans to catch a glimpse of their man.

He’s been impressive, too, playing with more freedom and confidence than he did previously. Indeed, he appears to be showcasing some of the talents which once led his manager at Royal Excel Mouscron to jokingly remark the club should ‘offer him a 20-year contract’. (Talksport)

That might be a bit excessive, of course. However, he’s certainly one for Liverpool supporters to keep tabs on.
