According to German publication Bild, Liverpool could sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner and then surprisingly loan him back to the Bundesliga outfit for a season.

Werner has a £52 million release clause in his current contract and Liverpool have been heavily fancied to secure his signature during the summer transfer window.

The striker who turned 24 on Friday is one of the most feared marksmen in European football and has a stunning goal record this season.

In 35 games in all competitions, he has bagged 27 goals and registered 11 assists for the side currently sat third in the Bundesliga.

Signing him and then allowing Leipzig to keep him on loan for another season would represent a surprising step by Liverpool.

Although Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are a formidable trio, the Reds don’t have a great deal in reserve.

Divock Origi is on the bench most weeks but he can’t be compared to Werner and Adam Lallana and Xherdan Shaqiri could both depart in the summer.

Boss Jurgen Klopp will surely want to add to his squad in the summer. The team who look set to win the title will want to maintain their dominance and strengthening seems like the right thing to do.

Signing Werner and loaning him back doesn’t seem to make much sense.

It could perhaps highlight, however, that Klopp isn’t ready to axe one of his current front three, however.

Firmino typically plays central and Werner is likely to compete for his place if he does sign.

At 28, the Brazilian has three years left on his current deal and has scored eight goals this season.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Werner deal plays out but it’s fair to say Werner is more than good enough to be a useful asset for Liverpool right now.
