Report: Liverpool considered £86m bid for Gerrard 2.0 this summer, never sent it for one reason
According to Bernabeu Digital, Liverpool considered making a €100m (£85.7m) bid for Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde this summer.
What’s the story?
Well, the Spanish news outlet believe Jürgen Klopp was so desperate to sign the 23-year-old, he was willing to break Liverpool’s transfer record.
However, Valverde’s agent told the Reds very clearly not to bother, as the 29-cap Uruguay international is determined to succeed in Madrid.
Now, the South American has signed a new contract with Carlo Ancelotti’s side until 2027, which suggests Bernabeu Digital‘s news is partly true.
Valverde has started both of Real Madrid’s La Liga games this season, and looks well placed to become a hero at the Santiago Bernabeu.
With Luka Modric and Toni Kroos aged 35 and 31 respectively, there will definitely be a place to shine in Real Madrid’s midfield soon.
Liverpool could’ve had Steven Gerrard 2.0
If Valverde had pushed for a move to Anfield, Klopp could’ve had the new Steven Gerrard on his hands.
These are not our words, but the words of the Daily Mail, who claimed that Real Madrid’s No.15 plays just like the Liverpool legend.
Interestingly, he also idolises Luis Suarez, another Liverpool icon.
Sadly, you can understand why Valverde wasn’t too keen to join the Reds, as the Daily Mail believe he’s actually a Manchester United fan!
That wouldn’t have gone down too well at Anfield.
In our view, this was a blessing in disguise.
Liverpool’s lack of midfield additions has allowed Harvey Elliott to break into the side, a player who could quite easily replicate Phil Foden this season with his phenomenal ability.
