If reports from the Daily Star are to be believed, Liverpool are closing in on their second signing of the summer transfer window – Inter Milan’s Mateo Kovacic.

According to the paper, sources in Croatia are claiming the 21-year-old has agreed personal terms with the Reds – who signed James Milner this week – but they need to agree a fee with Inter.

The Reds’ poor form this term, following the exhilaration of the season before, has raised questions regarding Brendan Rodgers’ suitability for the Anfield hot-seat.

His short-term security was confirmed following a meeting with club owners FSG on Wednesday, but his recruitment over the coming months could prove to vital. As such, Kovacic’s arrival could prove perfectly timed for Brendan Rodgers, for whom a summer rebuilding job is now essential.

Acquiring the talented Inter Milan prospect could prove a long-term solution to the midfield deficiencies facing the Reds. The 21-year-old emerged as a key player for the Serie A side this term, making 35 appearances and creating 62 chances – the second most of any other player at the club. He also completed 87% of his total attempted passes.

Liverpool have enjoyed success when recruiting from the Italian outfit in the past, with Philippe Coutinho proving a bargain buy just two seasons ago. Should Kovacic assert himself as quickly as the little Brazilian, he would be an instant success on Merseyside.
