Report: Liverpool battling Manchester United in race to sign Bundeliga Euro 2020 ace

German magazine Kicker have claimed that both Liverpool and Manchester United are battling to sign Hoffenheim’s Christoph Baumgartner. The Austrian youngster had impressed at Euro 2020 until they were knocked out at the last 16 stage by Italy. Liverpool and United have taken note.

Baumgartner enjoyed an excellent season with Hoffenheim in which the attacking midfielder had a hand in 16 goals during 41 games. Now a 14-time Austria international, he scored in a 1-0 win over Ukraine that sent his country into the knockouts. His form over the last year has caught the eye.

The latest report claims that Liverpool and United have ‘dealt with’ Baumgartner. It says that Saturday’s loss to Italy was his chance to present himself to English clubs, given the venue was Wembley. Previous reports have claimed that he is available for a bargain £16million.

Baumgartner has all the potential, a bargain for Liverpool at £16m

He certainly seems in the Liverpool mould. Young, exciting, Baumgartner would surely be the ideal replacement for Xherdan Shaqiri in the final third. He can play anywhere across the front three and even in attacking midfield. The Austrian is also pretty cheap, considering.

But it would not be unlikely that as interest in his services continues to rise, combined with his Euro 2020 outings, that that fee could rise. Liverpool should certainly approach Hoffenheim. After all, it worked out pretty well when they last signed an attacking player from the Bundesliga outfit.
