Report: Liverpool battling Barcelona to sign Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans
Football website CalcioMercato have claimed that Liverpool are battling Barcelona in the race to sign Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans this summer – just days after the Belgian star lashed home the winner in Sunday’s FA Cup final.
Tielemans, 24, has been Leicester’s midfield heartbeat since initially joining the club on loan from Monaco in January 2019. A deal was made permanent that summer for £40million (Leicester Mercury), and he has since clocked up 107 games in blue.
In that time, Tielemans has scored 17 goals and created 19 more but now it appears another move could be on the horizon. Leicester slipped out of the Champions League slots on Wednesday night, with Liverpool overtaking them into fourth.
The Reds are now expected to finish the season in the top four, and that might tempt Tielemans into a move. The report claims Barcelona are also taking a look – though Leicester are desperate to keep him, and are looking to extend his current deal.
TBR’s view – Tielemans would be a stunning signing
But a supremely expensive one. Given Leicester spent £40million to sign him, the chances of them letting him leave for anything less than double that price seem unlikely. He is one of the best number eights in Premier League football right now.
Liverpool need to replace Gini Wijnaldum and if money was no object, Tielemans would be ideal. But the chances of Liverpool spending such a figure to get Tielemans is unlikely. Looking elsewhere for a cheaper options has a much better chance.
