Report: Liverpool approach Raiola to discuss De Vrij transfer amid Inter Milan contract talks
According to FcInterNews, Liverpool have approached Mino Raiola to discuss a potential transfer of Stefan de Vrij amid prolonged negotiations over a new contract with Inter Milan.
The super-agent has long held an agreement with Nerazzurri Chairman Beppe Marotta to renew De Vrij’s deal through to the summer of 2025, but is yet to finalise the paperwork.
De Vrij is expected to earn around €4.5million-a-season (£74k-p/w) by renewing with the San Siro outfit, and could conclude negotiations by the end of the season after Raiola returned to Milan to meet with his client recently.
Inter Milan’s plans to renew with De Vrij, who they signed as a free agent (Sky Sports) after leaving Lazio at the end of his contract in 2018, have not prevented Liverpool from showing interest, however.
The Reds are understood to have reached out to Raiola to sound out any potential in the 29-year-old wishing to accept a new challenge, as have Barcelona as they look to improve Ronald Koeman’s options at the Camp Nou.
But any suitor wishing to sign De Vrij is unlikely to be successful, as the Dutch centre-half is happy at the San Siro and to continue his adventure in Milan after helping Inter to their first Serie A title in 11 years to end Juventus’ nine-year reign.
With Liverpool yet to see Virgil van Dijk step back onto the pitch since his knee ligament surgery (BBC) and are yet to trigger their option to buy FC Schalke 04 loanee Ozan Kabak (Sky Sports), it makes sense for the Merseysiders to explore potential defensive signings.
De Vrij would have offered Reds boss Jurgen Klopp a vastly experienced and talented option to help strengthen the German’s unit if he were open to a move to Anfield, having been capped by the Netherlands 43 times and started 29 of his 31 Serie A outings this term.
The 29-year-old is also lauded by Dutch great and former Feyenoord star Willem van Hanegem, who noted in his column for Algemeen Dagblad last month that De Vrij is ‘clearly better’ than Juventus’ Matthijs de Ligt and that he is ‘simply the best defender in Serie A’.
That is indeed high praise for De Vrij with De Ligt setting Juventus back £67.5m in 2019 (BBC), but unfortunately not praise that seems likely to improve Liverpool this summer.
