Liverpool and Manchester United are hoping to take advantage of the financial situation at Derby County to sign exciting talent, Kaide Gordon.
Derbyshire Live believe the two giants of English football are preparing to do battle for the Rams forward.
Derby have encountered problems with the takeover of the club and subsequently, players haven’t been paid for December.
As a result, the club needs to raise some cash quickly as they dangle perilously close to administration.
Derby are adamant that the club’s first-team regulars won’t be sold, with the Rams preferring to sell some of their academy prospects.
Gordon, 16, looks set for a bright future. He recently came on as a substitute to make his Championship debut during a 4-0 win over Birmingham.
The youngster plays in a number of attacking positions and is also an England under-16 international.
Derby face Rotherham United this weekend looking to climb out of the relegation zone.
The Rams look to be in a pickle off the pitch and the challenge for Rooney will be to ensure they remain focused on the green bit.
TBR View – Liverpool need Gordon more than United
Some supporters believe that the constant flow of youngsters capable of stepping up at Liverpool is slowing.
With that in mind, they must do all they can to ensure they land a player with the capabilities of Gordon.
He plays in a number of attacking roles and having already taken his first-team bow, the future looks really bright.
Liverpool have a strong history with talented youngsters and supporters worried at the current flow of graduates are probably being over the top.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Neco Williams and Caomhin Kelleher are all fine examples of the work being done at the club.
Liverpool won’t want one of the country’s top talents to go to a fierce rival though.
As a result, the champions must do whatever it takes to add Gordon to the Anfield academy ranks.
