Liverpool lost 4-0 to Manchester City last night, proving that despite their fantastic title-winning campaign there are still improvements that can be made to Jurgen Klopp’s team.
One area where many believe Liverpool could strengthen is in central midfield.
Now, according to one report, it appears that Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara is increasingly looking like the man for that job.
The Spanish international is out of contract in 12 months’ time and SportBild reported last month that he would not be signing a new deal in Bavaria. The same report also suggested Liverpool as a destination, with Jurgen Klopp a long-term fan of the player.
Indeed, after facing Bayern with Liverpool in the Champions League last season, Klopp called Thiago ‘world-class’, as reported by talkSPORT.
Now, Spanish publication SPORT is claiming that Liverpool have reached an agreement with the player over a move to Anfield.
The only problem is doing a deal with Bayern. They reportedly want €35 million (£31.5m) straight up for his services, as they look to balance the books following the signing of Leroy Sane.
However, Liverpool will not pay that much and they will look to ‘reduce the price’ or consider ‘imaginative formulas’ to fulfill the payment. That could mean installments or indeed potential player swaps.
If Liverpool can get the fee reduced to a reasonable amount then they would undoubtedly be improving their squad by bringing the Spanish wizard in this summer.
