Report: Liverpool add French sensation to shortlist, Wijnaldum replacement

Goal have claimed that Liverpool have added Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar to their summer shortlist as they look to bring in a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum this summer – with the Dutchman more than likely to depart.

Ex-Newcastle man Wijnaldum, 30, is out of contract at the end of June and can already speak to non-English clubs under the Bosman ruling over a pre-contract agreement. Inter Milan and Barcelona are being linked with him.

He will need replacing, and the latest report has highlighted a three-man shortlist of midfield talent that includes previously linked stars Florian Neuhaus of Borussia Monchengladbach, and Brighton’s Yves Bissouma.

But a new name has appeared and that is Lyon superstar Aouar. The France international is considered one of the best in Europe yet to make a big move, having had a hand in 60 goals during his 161 Lyon games.

ESPN stated last summer that Arsenal made an offer for the France international, but their £35million offer was way below Lyon’s asking price of £55million – though it was suggested Lyon would accept £41million plus add-ons.

TBR’s view – Why Aouar would be ideal for Liverpool

The Reds lack goals from the middle of the park. With Wijnaldum leaving, the only midfielder that consistently features for Jurgen Klopp’s side with a goal threat is Curtis Jones – and he has just four goals this season.

Klopp needs to take the pressure off the likes of Sadio Mane and Mo Salah, especially with Roberto Firmino struggling to find the net frequently. He can do that by signing a goalscoring midfielder and Aouar is just that.

Young, technically brilliant, goals and assists and available for little over £50million, Aouar would be a top signing. TransferMarkt claim he is represented by the same agency that look after Neco Williams and Joe Gomez.
