Report: Lille stance explained as Newcastle try to sign Thiago Maia on loan

French outlet La Voix Du Nord have claimed that Champions League side Lille OSC are unwilling to let midfielder Thiago Maia join Newcastle United, if The Toon want to sign the Brazilian on loan.

Maia, 22, has starred for Lille over the past two seasons. Clocking up 64 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side, and it has attracted the attention of Newcastle in the past couple of transfer windows.

It is believed Newcastle are making an effort to sign the Brazil Under-23 international this summer and want to land the ace on a loan-to-buy deal. But Lille President Gerard Lopez does not want to loan Maia out.

Indeed, Lopez is confident Maia is good enough to excel at Lille, and will only wave goodbye to the Brazilian if Newcastle look to sign him on a permanent basis. Le 10 Sport claimed Genoa are trying to sign him for £6.5million.

TBR’s view – Maia would be a bargain for Newcastle at £6.5m

Newcastle need additions in the middle of the park. The club have released Mo Diame after his contract expired last term, while Ki Sung-yueng struggled on Tyneside last campaign.

The breakthrough of Sean Longstaff eased Newcastle’s woes last season, but another central midfielder needs to be brought in and Maia – at a bargain £6.5million – is an excellent option.

He fits into owner Mike Ashley’s blueprint for transfers. Just 22 years of age and on the cheap, he has plenty of resale value. Newcastle have got to beat Genoa to Maia’s signature, on a permanent basis.
