TBR View: Links between Bayer Leverkusen and Saliba, disastrous transfer for Arsenal
Well, waking up this morning you may have seen that young Arsenal William Saliba has drawn links with a move to Bayer Leverkusen.
According to Kicker, the France youth international is a target for the Bundesliga outfit, who are keen to sign the defender this summer.
After a miserable start to the first half of this season, Saliba was sent on loan to Nice in January. He enjoyed a storming time with the French side, winning player of the month straight off the bat.
However, during the back end of 2020, there were reports the player was unhappy in north London. Some claims emerged reporting the central defender wanted to leave on a permanent deal.
The fresh Leverkusen reports clearly show there is optimism from clubs around Europe over signing the 20-year-old.
Should Arsenal entertain links between Bayer Leverkusen and Saliba, it would be a disastrous transfer decision. He’s shown during various spells away from the club that he can be a great defender, and with David Luiz on the way out, there’s space in the squad.
Selling a player compared to the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Raphael Varane, would only further increase the pressure to find a better option. And under the current market conditions, that could prove next to impossible.
Arsenal’s recent financial report claimed the club made a loss of almost £50m after taxes. It begs a question over how much money the Gunners will have to spend this summer.
With funds tight and Saliba proving during spells away he’s a great defender, it would be baffling to move him on this summer. At 20, he’s the future of the club and should be retained and used for years to come.
