Report: Leicester target star Rodgers claims ‘intimidates people’, Liverpool already offered deal
Leicester are exploring the situation of Liverpool-linked playmaker Philippe Coutinho as Barcelona warm to transfer offers, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Coutinho faces an uncertain future at the Camp Nou as the La Liga outfit deem the Brazilian to be sellable as they look to reduce a bloated wage bill. Barcelona would welcome his departure for the right price, three years after paying Liverpool up to £142million (BBC).
Leicester are one of the sides showing the most interest in a move for Coutinho this summer. With Brendan Rodgers also one of the figures driving the King Power Stadium natives’ pursuit, as he seeks a reunion.
The Foxes are assessing a potential €20m (£17m) bid for Coutinho but could offer Barcelona a loan deal. The terms would be similar to those that took the 29-year-old to Bayern Munich for the 2019/20 campaign.
Coutinho joined the Bundesliga outfit on a season-long loan that featured an option to buy for €120m (£103m), per AS. But Bayern elected against triggering the clause after the Brazilian struggled to establish himself in Germany.
He again faces an uncertain future at Barcelona now, despite two years remaining on his €13.5m-a-year (£220k-p/w) contract. A return to Liverpool has emerged as an option, as well, with AS claiming he was offered to the Reds.
Barcelona hoped that Coutinho returning to Anfield would allow them to avoid paying the in excess of €50m (£43m) still owed to Liverpool. The 64-cap international is also currently in Brazil recovering from surgery on a meniscus injury sustained in December.
TBR’s view: Liverpool could rue Coutinho at Leicester
Liverpool should be against accepting Barcelona’s offer to re-sign Coutinho as the terms far outweigh what Leicester could offer. But Jurgen Klopp could rue the Brazilian lining up at the King Power Stadium under Rodgers next season.
Rodgers is a firm believer in Coutinho’s ability from their time together at Liverpool. The midfielder played 112 games under the Foxes boss, returning 12 goals and 23 assists. Yet his numbers increased under Klopp with 37 goals and 22 assists in 89 games.
Rodgers has continued to laud Coutinho, though, despite his struggles at Barcelona. He told The Beautiful Game Podcast last year that the Brazilian ‘intimidates people’, and ‘if he comes back to the league, he will show that he’s world-class.’
Klopp should be reluctant to see Coutinho show that at Leicester if a Liverpool return is on the cards. But only if the terms are closer to what the Foxes could offer than what Barcelona suggested in May.
