Leeds United are interested in signing Oxford United midfielder Cameron Brannagan, according to a report from The Telegraph.

It would be no surprise to see Marcelo Bielsa sign a new striker. And there is perhaps also scope for a new winger to be brought in after Jack Clarke was recalled from his loan spell by Tottenham Hotspur.

But it appears that Leeds are also looking to bolster their options in the middle of the park. The Telegraph reports that the Championship leaders are tracking Brannagan.

It is suggested Karl Robinson is braced for bids for the 23-year-old, who came through the ranks at Liverpool. He made nine first-team appearances for the Reds before leaving in 2018.

Brannagan has been superb this season. The youngster has scored seven goals in all competitions. Meanwhile, he has contributed five assists in 19 League One appearances.

TBR View – Brannagan move could be shrewd, but may raise questions

Had Leeds had a fully fit squad, a move for a central midfielder would have seemed extremely unlikely. But both Adam Forshaw and Jamie Shackleton have struggled with injury this season.

Robbie Gotts made his first-team debut at Arsenal on Monday. And the academy graduate gave a very good account of himself at the Emirates. Some may argue that it was a performance that highlighted that the 20-year-old is capable of filling in when the likes of Forshaw and Shackleton are unavailable.

But Brannagan joining would add to the competition in that area of the field. And perhaps that may leave Gotts wondering what his future holds after waiting so long for a chance.

Brannagan is versatile so there is no definitive reason to believe that his arrival would push anyone closer to the exit. But perhaps some members of Bielsa’s squad may have some questions if the Oxford man was brought in.
