Report: Leeds want Manchester United’s Axel Tuanzebe amid Ben White doubts

Leeds United could turn their attention to Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe should they fail to bring Ben White back to Elland Road, according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (26/7; page 63).

White’s loan move proved to be an inspired one as Marcelo Bielsa’s side clinched the Championship title. Unfortunately, it appears that the chances of the centre-back returning ahead of next season are looking slim.

The Sun on Sunday (26/7; page 63) reports that while Brighton may be prepared to sell White to raise funds, they are not willing to let Leeds have him as they anticipate the Whites may be battling near them in the Premier League table next term.

That has prompted the club to look at Tuanzebe as his replacement.

TBR View: Tuanzebe interest looks surprising from Leeds

Tuanzebe looks to have a lot of ability. Nevertheless, it would arguably be a gamble for Leeds to look at replacing White with the 22-year-old.

The defender is currently sidelined with his third injury of the campaign. He has not played for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men since December, and his campaign will likely end with just two Premier League starts under his belt.

Solskjaer even told the club’s official website this month that the youngster is only likely to return in September.

Given that that would largely rule him out of pre-season, it would be a surprise to see Leeds make a move.

With Gaetano Berardi facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, the Whites can surely not afford to not make a signing in that area who is ready for the new campaign.

Signing Tuanzebe would be an interesting move from Leeds if they are keen.

Of course, given the club he would be joining from, he would be under additional pressure to step up. And filling White’s shoes will not make his task any easier.

But Manchester United appear to have high hopes for Tuanzebe. He claimed in March (via Telegraph) that he wanted to captain the club on a permanent basis in the future having worn the armband in the Carabao Cup this term.

So it will be very intriguing to see whether Leeds do make a move for the starlet, and whether Manchester United have any interest in letting him leave.
