Report: Leeds United ‘strongest’ in pursuit to sign Argentina international

Argentine outlet El Intransigente have claimed that Leeds United are winning the race to sign River Plate defender Lucas Martinez Quarta this summer, despite interest from both Milan clubs and La Liga sides.

Quarta, 24, has caught the attention of numerous European sides for his performances in a River shirt – which has also earned him four Argentina caps. He has now entered the final 12 months of his contract.

The report states that Leeds face competition from Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan, AC Milan, Fiorentina, Real Betis and Valencia. However, it states that Leeds’ interest is the ‘strongest’ in Quarta and are very keen on signing him.

It is believed that Quarta has a release clause worth £19.5million, but that River are willing to accept offers in the region of £12million for the highly-rated defender. The chance to play under Marcelo Bielsa could prove tempting.

TBR’s view – Quarta could be cheap replacement for Ben White

White has been sensational for Leeds this season but many supporters are concerned that a permanent deal may prove impossible to secure. Indeed, some reports claim Brighton want north of £30million for White.

Brighton may choose not to sell at all, and they could hardly be criticised if they do that. So, signing a ball-playing defender to replace White – or at least identifying a replacement – is crucial. Quarta, at £12million, is ideal.
