Peruvian outlet La Republica have claimed that Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is a contender to take over as manager of South American country Peru.

The 63-year-old, who is earning a huge £77,000 a week at Elland Road, has a contract until the end of the 2019-20 season but speculation has suggested that the Argentine could leave if Leeds do not gain promotion.

The Whites are set to enter the play-offs, with one more league game to play. They could face either Bristol City, Derby County or Middlesbrough.

But Bielsa could leave the club, with Peru looking for a new manager. Ahead of this summer’s Copa America, current Peru manager Ricardo Gareca under fire from the Peruvian board.

Other names being linked with the role are Newcastle United legend Nolberto Solano, and experienced manager Roberto Mosquera who played 16 times for his country as a player.

TBR’s view

Bielsa has plenty of know how at national team level. He has taken control of both Chile and Argentina, and has a huge reputation in South America.

He is an obvious contender for any role at national team level in that continent, and has already been linked with the Mexico job since he took over at Elland Road.

Promotion is key, in Leeds keeping Bielsa. If they remain in the Championship, Peru could be tempting.
