Leeds United are hoping to finally complete the signing of Wigan Athletic striker, Joe Gelhardt, this week, despite worries about a potential late bid from Everton or Rangers.
Reports from Leeds Live earlier in the week suggested that Wigan may be waiting it out in order to start a bidding war for the youngster.
However, The Mirror claims today that Leeds will indeed wrap up the signing of Gelhardt this week. The Whites are expected to pay around £1m upfront for the forward, with the fee rising to around £2.5m with add-ons.
The teenager has burst onto the scene this season with the Latics but couldn’t help them from slipping into League One. Indeed, their fate has been confirmed today after an unsuccessful appeal against their 12-point deduction.
Gelhardt, then, is expected to sign his deal at Elland Road. He has reportedly already been shown around Thorp Arch and it appears now that it is just a matter of time before a deal is completed.
A quality young player who will flourish under Bielsa’s guidance – TBR View
Any young player must be delighted to get the chance to work with Marcelo Bielsa. So, it’s little surprise to see Gelhardt agreeing to terms with Leeds, especially given they’re now back in the big time.
The Wigan starlet should progress nicely and while he might not get a lot of minutes, he’ll definitely improve with time.
Bielsa does like to give his young players a chance. Gelhardt, then, will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Jamie Shackleton, Ian Poveda, and Pascal Struijk in helping out the first XI.
