French website Le Phoceen have claimed that Leeds United are tracking Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta but face competition from other Bundesliga sides and Andre Villas-Boas’ Marseille.
Mateta, 23, boasts the same goalscoring stats as Patrick Bamford with 10 goals in 17 – though Bamford’s finishes have all come in the Premier League. Mateta has seven goals in 15 Bundesliga outings, and three in two cup games.
The report states that Leeds are keeping tabs on the French striker, who has a valuation in the region of £13.5million. His contract at Mainz is said to expire in the summer of 2023, and is able to play both up front and out wide.
TBR’s view – Do Leeds need another striker?
Tyler Roberts has been linked with leaving the club on loan having failed to break into the matchday squads during the last two games against Tottenham and Crawley. Rodrigo Moreno, meanwhile, is better used in midfield.
If Roberts does depart, it leaves Marcelo Bielsa with just Bamford up front and while he is in good form – he needs competition, or may get comfortable. Bringing in Mateta, a different type of striker, makes sense.
He also offers the ability to play out wide and Bielsa is renowned for preferring versatile players in his squad – the likes of Stuart Dallas, Luke Ayling and more have thrived because of that. Mateta is a good addition.
