The Express & Star have claimed that Leeds United will have to pay another £5million to Wolverhampton Wanderers for Helder Costa after the club gained promotion to the Premier League.

Costa, 26, joined Leeds on loan last summer with an obligatory clause in his contract to make the deal permanent. He played 46 times during 2019-20, having a hand in 13 goals as the Whites gained promotion.

Reports claimed that Costa would set Leeds back £16million to sign him permanently and a four-year deal has since been agreed for the one-time Portugal international. However, promotion is likely to see that fee increase.

Indeed, the report claims Leeds will now have to pay another £5million – on top of the original £16million fee – after they gained promotion, taking the overall tally to £21million. Fulham will have to do the same for Ivan Cavaleiro.

TBR’s view – Have Leeds now overpaid for Costa?

Costa played a crucial part in promotion to the Premier League, and is a player with top-flight experience. He has a Portugal cap on his CV, as well as senior appearances for both Monaco and Benfica.

Though he was not a crucial part in terms of finding the back of the net, he was one of Bielsa’s main men. So, is he worth a whopping £21million? Given that that figure makes him the club’s second most-expensive signing, no.

TransferMarkt claim a £21million fee would make him second to just Rio Ferdinand. Leeds have surely overpaid for a player that scored just five goals last season. Yes he is a good signing, but over £20million is a huge fee.
