Leeds United plan to restart contract talks with Kalvin Phillips at the end of the season and confident that he wants to stay at Elland Road, according to a report from The Times.

Phillips is one of the Leeds players being linked with a move away this summer. Reports have already claimed that Aston Villa are preparing a £60 million move at the end of the campaign.

Those reports from The Times also suggested that Villa were prepared to offer a deal worth around £192,000-a-week. And Leeds are not necessarily in the strongest position with Phillips’ current contract expiring in 2024.

However, it would appear that the Whites are optimistic that the 26-year-old is set to commit his future to the club.

The Times reports that fresh contract talks will be held in the summer. And Leeds are confident that Phillips will extend his deal. Phillips himself, has reportedly intimated that he is keen to stay.

That will not only be a disappointment for Villa. The Times notes that West Ham also want the England international. And he has also been regularly scouted by Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

Leeds starting contract talks with Kalvin Phillips this summer makes perfect sense

Some supporters may be concerned about Leeds not sorting Phillips’ future at the earliest opportunity. It has been made even clearer this season just how important he is to the club.

The Whites have perhaps made an error not resolving the situation sooner. However, it looks to be a sensible move from all parties to now hold off on talks until the summer.

Leeds’ future is not yet clear. Certainly, Whites fans will not begrudge Phillips leaving if they go down. So signing a new deal makes little sense right now.

Leeds’ focus is on staying up. And there may not be a better way to kick off the summer than to announce a new deal for Phillips.
