Spanish outlet La Grada Online claim that Leeds United are set to complete the signing of Espanyol teenager Mateo Fernandez, for a fee of £850,000.
Fernandez, 17, is said to be a target for Barcelona but Leeds are closing in on a move to beat the Nou Camp side. He has rejected a new contract.
The striker failed to play a single minute during pre-season, with Espanyol choosing not to meet his high demands. His current deal ends in 2022.
According to reports, the Spaniard has already penned an agreement with Leeds – while others state that Leeds have only made their interest clear.
The report states that Leeds will only get Fernandez, or any other club for that matter, if an offer is made close to his release clause.
Leeds close in on Fernandez: Exciting addition for U23 side
Mark Jackson’s side have gained promotion to the top tier of Premier League 2, shining in Under-23 football last season – finishing as champions.
Now, they are competing with England’s best Under-23 sides. They spent big in the summer, in order to improve Jackson’s squad.
In came Lewis Bate from Chelsea, Sean McGurk from Wigan, Amari Miller from Birmingham and Leo Hjelde from Celtic – among others.
But with Joe Gelhardt seemingly breaking into the senior side, Leeds could do with another forward for their second string. Fernandez is that man.
Fernandez is clearly a top talent. While unknown, to have Barcelona looking is proof he would be an exciting signing for Leeds reserves.
