Report: Leeds set sights on 27-year-old 'man-mountain' who's 'right at the top of his game'
Leeds United have reportedly joined the race to sign a centre-back his manager has described as a “man-mountain”.
According to TEAMtalk, the Whites are one of several Premier League sides eyeing Blackburn ace Darragh Lenihan.
As well as Leeds, the likes of Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Wolves and Everton reportedly want to sign the 27-year-old once his contract expires.
Lenihan has enjoyed a sensational campaign this season, helping Blackburn into the Championship’s top two.
The Republic of Ireland international has made 28 appearances in all competitions, including 26 in the league.
However, Lenihan’s £14,000-a-week contract is up at the end of the season.
And Leeds – as well as Newcastle, Villa, Wolves and Everton – have apparently registered their interest in signing him on a free transfer.
That said, Lenihan will reportedly delay talks until the end of the season in the hope of helping Rovers go up.
The 6ft 2in ace is eager to play in the Premier League. One way or another, he’s bound to achieve this goal next term.
“He’s a special footballer”
Lenihan came through the ranks at Ewood Park after joining their academy from Belvedere FC in 2011.
He has clocked up 237 competitive appearances for his club.
Lenihan has been one of his side’s best and most consistent performers, earning praise from boss Tony Mowbray.
In December, he helped Blackburn record a 4-0 win over Birmingham.
“I need to mention Lenihan who has got the added responsibility of captain, leadership and he’s showing that,” RTE quoted Mowbray as saying.
“He’s standing like a man mountain. Delighted for Darragh. He’s right at the top of his game.
“You can just tell by the way he plays on the front foot. He’s towering over people six inches taller than him, his passing looks so assured, long passing.
“He’s got clear pictures in his mind I think of how we want to play and what his job is, he’s a special footballer.”
