Report: Leeds-owned Barry Douglas open to Rangers move, has admitted he is a boyhood fan of Ibrox club
Barry Douglas has returned to Leeds United after a loan spell with second-tier outfit Blackburn Rovers. However, the Premier League club have confirmed he will be released this summer as a free agent. A boyhood Rangers fan, the YEP have suggested he would consider a move to Ibrox.
Having been brought in by Marcelo Bielsa from Wolves in 2018, Douglas spent a difficult couple of seasons at Leeds. Though considered a leader of the group and a likeable member, he was unable to shake off constant injuries. He managed just 44 outings in two seasons.
With his contract expiring in June, the one-time Scotland international all but ended his Leeds stay last summer by going on loan to Blackburn. He remains open to a return to Blackburn after playing 31 times for Tony Mowbray’s side. But right now, it is unclear what his future holds.
During first lockdown, Douglas admitted to the Talking Shutt podcast that he is a boyhood Rangers fan. He grew up minutes from Ibrox. There has been some talk over a potential move, and asked by Graham Smyth of the YEP – Douglas says he would be open to a return.
The YEP say: ‘He’s unaware of the “noise” linking him to a move to Rangers, although admits if a chance to move back to his home city arose he’d have to consider it, and after spells in Poland and Turkey, he’s open minded about his future: “It depends what opportunities present themselves.”‘
Leeds defender Douglas could be a smart signing for Rangers
For a number of reasons. Firstly, a Rangers fan and on a free are certainly qualities that will entice Rangers. Also, that Steven Gerrard properly lacks cover on the left side of the defence. Calvin Bassey has been indifferent, while Joe Aribo was used at left-back towards the end of the season.
Rangers need more sustainable cover for Borna Barisic and Douglas is in a similar mould. Keen to get on the ball, his delivery is impeccable – allowing him to lay on 15 assists during 2017-18 with Wolves. A good character to have around, Douglas would be a solid signing for a season or two.
