Report: Leeds offered Winks and van de Beek loans in January
Marcelo Bielsa was offered the chance to sign both Harry Winks and Donny van de Beek on loan during the January transfer window, but The Athletic reports that the Leeds United boss deemed that neither player was an ideal fit for his side.
Last month proved to be a frustrating one for supporters. Six points on the pitch was a decent return. However, defeat in their final game – against Newcastle, no less – took much of the shine off the performances.
And as the deadline loomed in the window, it appeared that plenty of Leeds fans could not contain their frustration. Many took to Twitter to express their anger as the Whites let February arrive without a new signing for the first-team coming in.
There were links. Takumi Minamino was seemingly an option heading into the final days. But Crysencio Summerville staying put paid to any hopes of landing the Liverpool forward.
Unsurprisingly, Leeds were offered plenty more names, too. In fact, The Athletic claims that both Winks and van de Beek were offered on loan by intermediaries during the month.
Leeds turned down the chance to sign Winks in the summer. And The Athletic suggests that Bielsa was not convinced that either would work out in his side. Thus, Leeds let the opportunity pass.
Plenty of Leeds fans would have likely taken Winks or van de Beek signings
Of course, van de Beek would seal a move before the deadline. The Dutchman – who cost Manchester United £35 million – has joined Everton for the rest of the season.
Winks meanwhile, has forced his way back into the Tottenham fold under Antonio Conte. He was previously lauded as a ‘perfect‘ midfielder by Mauricio Pochettino.
And Conte subsequently confirmed that he planned to keep the England international.
Neither has completely silenced their doubters in the Premier League in the last few years. And Leeds signing another Manchester United player this season would have been controversial.
But with the fans now dealing with a disappointment over their lack of new arrivals, it is likely that signing Winks or van de Beek would have been welcomed by many had any sort of loan taken place.
