The Daily Mail have claimed Leeds United have joined the race for Gillingham youngster Jack Tucker and have been monitoring the highly-rated defender throughout the season – but face plenty of top-flight competition.
Tucker, 20, has broken into League One side Gillingham’s starting eleven on a regular basis this season – having previously managed just three outings. He has taken his tally to 36 in total, even scoring against Tottenham’s Under-23 side.
The report states that although Gillingham have managed to pay their playing staff this month, they may have to sell a star player in order to do so next time around. Tucker could be offloaded, though it does not state how much for.
The ball is certainly in Gillingham’s park, though, with the youngster boasting a contract until 2022. The Mail also state that Celtic, Rangers, West Ham and Southampton are all interested, as are Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds.
TBR’s view – Which move would benefit Tucker most?
All five interested parties could do with additions at centre-back, and all are known for their desire to bring through young players – though West Ham are probably the worst of the quintet in doing so.
Rangers do have the likes of Nikola Katic, George Edmundson and Nikola Katic and Tucker would struggle to break past that, while Celtic have Kris Ajer, Jozo Simunovic, Christopher Jullien and Nir Bitton.
Southampton are excellent for bringing through younger players and could do with a centre-back, but Leeds may be the best move given Bielsa’s faith in youth. Gaetano Berardi’s contract is due to expire, while Ben White is only on loan.
Leeds need Tucker most, and in terms of game time, Elland Road would be the best move.
