Report: Leeds may get chance to sign Douglas Costa for nothing this summer

Leeds United could be handed the chance to sign Juventus winger, Douglas Costa, for nothing this summer, according to Calciomercato.

The Italian media outlet claims that Juve are keen on moving Costa on and shifting his mammoth wages off their books in the summer.

Costa is said to earn around £6m a year in Turin. That comes in at over £160k-a-week in terms of wages, something which Leeds would have to take a serious look at if they did want the Brazilian.

The same publication claimed just at the beginning of this month at Marcelo Bielsa was keeping an eye on Costa. That report stated that AC Milan, along with Leeds, were interested in the Brazilian trickster, who Juve previously hoped to land around £11m for.

Any move by Leeds would be a big statement. Costa’s wages – if he signs a similar deal with Leeds – would make him the highest earner at the club by some way.

But with 31 caps for Brazil and multiple titles under his belt, Costa might well prove a good signing. Especially so, if the Whites end up having to sell Raphinha after his explosive first season in the Premier League.

TBR View: Costa is quality but those wages are eye-watering

You wouldn’t put it past Leeds to make a big splash in the market this summer with Victor Orta running things, but this would be a huge gamble.

The problem with Costa is he has little resale value. He’s into his 30s now and would be a high risk signing. On his day, he is an exceptional winger but questions remain whether he has enough of those days.

It’s probably one Leeds should ignore. The sums are just huge and in a nutshell, probably not worth it.
