Report: Leeds make contact to sign Newcastle star

The Northern Echo have claimed Leeds United have made initial enquiries to sign Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle, and prefer the English striker to the signing of Inter Milan star Facundo Colidio.

Gayle, 28, starred for West Brom last season, during a loan spell from Newcastle. He scored 24 goals in 41 matches, helping the Baggies reach the play-off semi-final – in which he scored against Aston Villa.

Leeds are set to sell Kemar Roofe to Anderlecht for a fee of £7million this summer, after the former West Brom and Oxford United ace underwent a medical with Vincent Kompany’s side on Monday.

Steve Bruce has made it clear that he is happy with his options up front, which consists of just Gayle and new record signing Joelinton. The club parted ways with Joselu and Salomon Rondon at the end of the season.

But Gayle – who is on a £40k-a-week contract (Spotrac) – is unsure over whether he will get game time at Newcastle, given the new signing of Joelinton. He is also said to be upset that the Brazilian has been handed a number nine shirt.

TBR’s view – Leeds have simply got to sign Gayle

Leeds missed out on promotion last season because they lacked a striker who could find the back of the net on a regular basis. The Whites created the chances, boasted the possession, and defended well.

But they lacked a goalscorer and with Roofe leaving, Leeds need Gayle. Adding the ex-Crystal Palace striker into Marcelo Bielsa’s side will push the Yorkshire outfit closer to promotion and a return to the Premier League.
