Report: Leeds interested in Wales international Rabbi Matondo
Leeds United are interested in a move for Rabbi Matondo, with Bild in Germany reporting that they are one of a number of Premier League sides monitoring the Wales international.
Matondo’s £11 million move to Schalke has not exactly worked out so far. He spent some time on loan at Stoke City, before joining Cercle Brugge for this past season.
The Belgian side had the option to make his deal permanent. However, they were unable to agree terms with the 21-year-old. And it now seems that he could return to England in this window.
Bild reports that Leeds, Brentford and Nottingham Forest all want the winger. There are also a host of French sides keen on signing Matondo.
The report notes that he has been a flop with Schalke. The option to buy agreed with Cercle was worth just over £3 million. So it does appear that they are prepared to make a substantial loss on the former Manchester City youngster.
Leeds interested in Rabbi Matondo
Matondo had a good spell in Belgium, scoring nine times in the top-flight. And he is now into double figures for appearances for his country.
He has also been praised by Pep Guardiola in the past. The Manchester City boss noted that he is ‘incredibly fast‘ as he closed in on the move to Germany.
And it does appear that a deal for Matondo would not take a big bite out of Leeds’ transfer budget. So Victor Orta may feel that a move is worth a gamble.
However, some of the fans will be a little concerned given some of the mistakes the club have made in the market.
Leeds will have plenty of knowledge of Matondo. Of course, he is an international teammate of both Tyler Roberts and Daniel James. So you would imagine that the pair will have been consulted about the 21-year-old.
So it will be interesting to see whether Leeds do indeed pursue a deal for Matondo in the weeks ahead.
