Leeds United are close to coming to an agreement with goalkeeper, Illan Meslier, over a new contract at Elland Road.

Meslier, 21, has emerged as a key player for Marcelo Bielsa’s men and has firmly cemented the number one spot, despite his young age.

And now The Athletic have reported that Meslier is in advanced talks over a new contract with Leeds, with an announcement expected in the coming days.

The Frenchman kept 11 clean-sheets last term as Leeds enjoyed a stunning return to the Premier League. Marcelo Bielsa led his team to ninth, with Meslier playing a key role in that end result.

Although there is no mention of the terms, it is expected Meslier will see an increase in his salary, as well as a long-term commitment. The 21-year-old signed for Leeds in the summer of 2020 for around £5m, signing a three-year deal at the time. (BBC)

Leeds kick off their campaign this weekend with a tough trip to Old Trafford.

Meslier deserves new Leeds contract

There simply aren’t many 21-year-old goalkeeper as good, or with the same experience already, as Meslier. Therefore, it makes all kind of sense for Leeds to tie him down.

There’s scope for improvement in his game, of course. But Leeds could have their goalkeeper for the next decade or more here, so don’t be surprised to see a five or six-year deal.

At £5m, Meslier has proved to be quite the bargain. If Leeds can maintain their good form, and the Frenchman can too, then there’s no reason why the Whites can’t kick on again this season.
