Leeds Live have claimed that Leeds United have asked Newcastle United about a January move for Dwight Gayle following Eddie Nketiah’s return to Arsenal – but they have been told to pay through the nose for a player struggling for game time.
The Whites have long been linked with a move for 28-year-old striker Gayle, as they look for a player that can fire them towards the Premier League for the first time in 16 years. Many supporters believe Gayle is the man to do that.
The former Crystal Palace star has netted a whopping 59 goals in 100 Championship appearances – helping Newcastle return to the Premier League before his goals pushed West Bromwich Albion into the play-offs last season.
At Newcastle, Gayle is struggling for game time. Just 150 minutes of Premier League football has been spread across seven substitute appearances and one start. Now, the report claims Leeds have asked about signing Gayle.
Third-choice behind Joelinton and Andy Carroll and lacking in game time, you would be forgiven for thinking Newcastle would be willing to sell Gayle. But The Toon want a substantial wage contribution, and a £20million obligation to buy in the summer.

TBR’s view – Gayle is excellent, but he is not worth the financial risk
Many supporters are of the belief that signing Gayle will see Leeds promoted – but it is too much to say one player can make such a difference. Gayle could get injured, or a lack of confidence from his small game time this season may have an effect.
For such a big financial outlay that would see Leeds pay the majority of his £50,000-a-week wages and spend an enormous £20million in the summer to get him permanently, he is simply not worth the risk. An initial loan fee is also likely.
