Report: Leeds, Fulham and Stoke want Middlesbrough defender Daniel Ayala

Daniel Ayala is out of contract at the end of this season.

Leeds United are among the clubs keen on signing Daniel Ayala from Middlesbrough.

According to TEAMtalk, Middlesbrough will sell Ayala in January to avoid losing him for nothing in the summer. Middlesbrough do not want to lose their star defender but cannot afford to extend his contract beyond the end of the season.

As a result, a trio of Championship clubs are taking notice. Leeds will battle with Fulham and Stoke City for the Spaniard, who has been with Middlesbrough since 2014.

In that time, Ayala has chalked up a tally of more than 200 appearances. He has firmly established himself as a fan favourite at The Riverside Stadium in the Premier League and the Championship.

Ayala came through the ranks at Liverpool after joining their academy from Sevilla. Since then, he has forged a career in English football with numerous loan spells and a permanent stint at Norwich City.

After five years with Middlesbrough, Ayala could be set for a new challenge. Leeds might be his new club but Fulham and Stoke will be hoping to land a bargain.

TBR’s view

Leeds currently have a shortage in central defence. If Marcelo Bielsa’s men are hit with injuries at the back, a makeshift defence is needed. Ayala could add strength in depth in this department.

The 29-year-old also offers invaluable experience at Championship level. This could help Leeds get over the line with promotion. And he would be a strong squad option in the Premier League too.
