Football website 90Min have claimed that Everton, Leeds United, Arsenal and Chelsea are all set to miss out in the race to sign Hearts left-back Aaron Hickey this summer – with Scottish champions Celtic set to agree a deal for the teenage star.
Hickey, 17, has thrown his name onto the shortlist of many British clubs ahead of the summer window after starring in a very disappointing Hearts side. With the end of the Scottish Premiership seeing Hearts relegated, Hickey is set to leave.
He played 30 times in all competitions after initially making his debut last season and his performances on the left side of the defence have caught the eye. Craig Levein told Edinburgh Live Hickey is “The most two-footed I’ve ever seen.”
Despite interest from some of England’s biggest clubs, Hickey has chosen Celtic having been on the books with the champions during the 2017-18 season. He returned to Hearts and has gone from strength to strength.
TBR’s view – Hickey has best chance of game time at Celtic
A move to the likes of Everton, Chelsea or Arsenal will simply see Hickey join up with the Under-23 sides or go on loan, but at Celtic, Hickey has a chance of becoming a first-team player under Neil Lennon.
Greg Taylor has had an indifferent first season at Parkhead since his move from Kilmarnock, while Kieran Tierney’s replacement Boli Bolingoli has struggled – in comparison to his price tag.
Hickey will want game time, given he has 34 senior outings under his belt already. Celtic have the best chance of giving him that opportunity, compared to Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton and Leeds.
