Leeds United are believed to be interested in Sam Johnstone heading into the summer, according to a report from the Express and Star.
It would be no surprise to see Marcelo Bielsa’s side forced to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks this summer.
Kiko Casilla is reportedly earning more than £32,000-a-week, according to Spotrac. And with Illan Meslier well clear in the pecking order, it seems like a good time for the Spaniard to move on.
And it appears that the goalkeeper Leeds may set their sights on is Johnstone.
It is not the first time that Leeds have been linked with the 28-year-old. The Sun reported in December that the Whites were weighing up a January bid for the stopper.
So perhaps it would not be a surprise if Bielsa’s men did have Johnstone on their radar with Sam Allardyce’s side needing to claw back an eight point deficit to stay up.
Johnstone has been a shining light at the Hawthorns throughout the campaign. According to FBRef, no goalkeeper has made more saves this season. Meslier meanwhile, is third on the list.
Whether Johnstone has any interest in moving to Elland Road is unclear. Bielsa has shown little sign of being anything other than incredibly pleased with Meslier this season.
There is every chance therefore, that the West Brom man would arrive as a number two. He could bide his time in the hope that he can take Meslier’s place further down the line.
But with the Frenchman developing at a rapid rate, that sort of strategy would potentially be a huge gamble.
