Report: Leeds battling Newcastle for Chelsea star
Leeds United are one of the Premier League sides keen on signing Ross Barkley in January, with 90min reporting that the Whites are battling Newcastle United for the Chelsea star.
Barkley has been a peripheral figure at Stamford Bridge this season. He did feature in their win over Southampton before the international break.
But it does appear that he could be on the move in the January transfer window.
90min reports that a number of Premier League sides want the 27-year-old. Leeds, Newcastle and Burnley are all admirers of the attacking midfielder.
It is claimed that Barkley is one of the players who has been offered to the new owners at St James’ Park. But Leeds are also said to be looking at a deal.
Barkley returning to Leeds would be huge surprise
Leeds fans will certainly want to see a new midfielder arrive in January if possible.
It has been an issue throughout the season. And their inability to stamp any kind of authority on the midfield battle at the weekend cost them dearly.
But a move for Barkley would be a huge shock.
He earns £110,000-a-week with the Blues, according to The Telegraph. So Leeds would surely have to make him one of their highest earners.
Marcelo Bielsa clearly dislikes signing first-team players in January. They have little time to get used to his ways of working.
And Barkley is not someone who will have arrived after playing lots of football. So the time he would need to adapt would be even longer.
Victor Orta may well be looking at him. But it is hard to imagine Leeds making any sort of move for Barkley when January comes around.
