Report: Leeds and Newcastle speed up Jose Cifuentes pursuit
Leeds United and Newcastle have been told that Brighton are looking to do a £6 million deal for Jose Cifuentes, prompting the pair to speed up their pursuit of the 23-year-old, according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (21/8; page 57).
Cifuentes is attracting attention after a superb year with Los Angeles FC. The Ecuador international has scored seven goals and contributed six assists in 24 games.
Reports recently claimed that Leeds wanted the central midfielder. But Jesse Marsch’s men are not the only team monitoring Cifuentes.
According to The Sun on Sunday, both Leeds and Newcastle are rushing through their checks as they weigh up making a move for the youngster.
And there is a reason why they are stepping up their efforts. They have reportedly been tipped off that the Seagulls are working on a £6 million move for Cifuentes.
Leeds and Newcastle speed up Cifuentes pursuit
It would be a surprise if Leeds now made a bid for Cifuentes. The fans are desperate for the club to bring in at least one more signing. But that addition needs to be either a left-back or striker.
Should Jesse Marsch’s men now sign another central midfielder, there will be a lot of frustration if he proves to be the final addition of the window.
That is not to say that Cifuentes would not be an exciting signing. He is a ‘terrific‘ player. But Leeds surely have much greater priorities right now. Similarly, Newcastle will also be focused on signings further up the field.
However, the Magpies spending £6 million on Cifuentes would be less concerning to their supporters. Eddie Howe’s men look much more willing to be busy right up until the deadline.
But both appear to need to step up their interest if they hope to sign Cifuentes with Brighton seemingly on pole position.
