Leeds United and Celtic are amongst the clubs to have joined the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur target Joe Gelhardt, according to a report from The Sun.
The Sun reports that Gelhardt’s club Wigan Athletic are looking to move players on as quickly as possible after they were put into administration.
And it is suggested that Gelhardt is one of the players who could leave in the near future. There certainly appears to be no shortage of potential admirers.
The Sun reports that Leeds, Celtic and Southampton have joined Spurs and Everton in the battle for the 18-year-old.
It is noted that the striker has now entered the final year of his contract with the Latics.
TBR View: Leeds may offer Gelhardt’s best option
Gelhardt could certainly be forgiven for finding any of the reported options tempting. All of the clubs boast a good record when it comes to putting faith in younger players.
It would therefore, be difficult to criticise any decision he makes over his future. But perhaps considering a switch to Elland Road could actually be the smartest.
Marcelo Bielsa tends to work with a much smaller pool of players. And that has meant that plenty of youngsters have been named in the Championship leaders’ matchday squads this term.
Gelhardt can be optimistic therefore, that he stands a fantastic chance of quickly being involved in the first-team picture at Leeds should he join.
It should also be noted that the one area where Leeds perhaps lack depth in their youth ranks is up front. So there could be a real opportunity for Gelhardt to enjoy a prominent role amongst the under-23s where he can really target catching Bielsa’s eye.
