Italian outlet Il Messaggero have claimed that Lazio defender Jordan Lukaku is to be offered to Newcastle United in a player-plus-cash deal for Toon skipper Jamaal Lascelles.
Italian outlet La Lazio Siamo Noi claimed earlier this week that Lazio were interested in Lascelles, though the report claimed Lazio valued the Toon skipper at just £14million. Arsenal’s Calum Chambers is also said to be a target.
Now, Lazio are believed to go one step further and include Belgium international Lukaku, who is the younger brother of Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku. Newcastle were linked with the left-back in January.
Indeed, Sky Sports report that Newcastle were within an inch of bringing the defender to St. James’ Park – only for The Toon to pull the plug on a deal last minute after concerns were raised during the player’s medical.
The intended loan deal could have proved an expensive one, with France Football claiming a £19million permanent deal had been included. Instead, a move fell through and Newcastle could now get Lukaku, but lose Lascelles.
This move largely depends on the cash on offer alongside Lukaku. Indeed, Newcastle desperately need a left-back and Lukaku would be a top signing if he can prove his injury woes are in the past.
The money is important because Lascelles is crucial to the Toon. He has been excellent over the last two seasons, and can consider himself unlucky not to be called up to the England side.
It remains to be seen what the offer is, but with Lascelles’ contract lasting until the summer of 2024, it is unlikely Lazio will be able to lure the ex-Nottingham Forest star away from Tyneside.
