Report: Klopp now tells Liverpool to go out and sign 22-year-old defender, he's seriously impressed by him

Liverpool have history when it comes to Braga defender David Carmo.

In January 2021, Jurgen Klopp was in dire need of new central defenders and the search went right down to the final day of the transfer window.

Klopp eventually ended up with Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak and neither of those players are part of the historic push for the quadruple.

It was expected at the time that Carmo would make the move to Anfield, with senior Braga figures having since been candid on how close the deal was to happening.

Last April, Braga president Antonio Salvador said on interest in Carmo from other clubs: “We are always under pressure to sell but we have managed to keep our players as long as possible.

“In January, David Carmo had a foot and a half at Liverpool, but we ended up keeping him. He still has several suitors but we have managed to keep him for now.”

Liverpool currently look well-stocked at the heart of their defence but a report by Portuguese outlet O Jogo claims that Klopp is ‘enchanted’ by Carmo, having kept tabs on him since coming so close to landing him.

The German has apparently recommended that Liverpool go out and sign him in a summer where he is reportedly very likely to move.

Do Liverpool need Carmo?

The only way Liverpool would need Carmo is if one of their current four central defenders left and the only one who looks at risk in any sort of way is Joe Gomez.

The Englishman has dropped off the national team radar ahead of the World Cup due to a lack of gametime, although he did recently put in an ‘outstanding‘ display deputising for Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back.

The report claims that Carmo has a £33.7 million release clause and has interest across England, as well as in Spain and Italy.

Would Liverpool pay that much for a player who could be fourth choice? Potentially, given the lack of need for urgent surgery in other areas of the squad, but surely only if Gomez departed Anfield this summer.
