The Daily Record has claimed that Rangers and Steven Gerrard have informed winger Jordan Jones that he can leave Ibrox in the coming weeks – and three English clubs are interested in signing the wide man.

Jones, 25, joined the club last summer under the Bosman ruling from Kilmarnock – with a deal for the five-time Northern Ireland international having been agreed some time before his move.

However, he managed just 14 appearances in his first season. He failed to score, and managed just two assists for the Gers with his most notable involvement in a Rangers shirt being a red card against Celtic last September.

A knee injury prevented Jones from featuring on a more regular basis, but now it appears Gerrard is happy to see him go. Middlesbrough are keen to have him back, while Stoke and Tony Mowbray’s Blackburn are also interested.

TBR’s view – Jones unlucky, but needed quicker impact

Yes, the England-born midfielder should consider himself unlucky that he was not given regular game time since moving to Ibrox and that a long-term knee problem came at the worst possible time.

But he needed to make a quicker impact. A goal or two in his early appearances and helping Rangers against Celtic, rather than being sent off, would have made him a more established-member of the side.

With Jamie Murphy shining on loan and then returning this summer, the more experienced Scotland international is likely to be used ahead of Jones. A move down south beckons.
