The Northern Echo has claimed that Leeds United are interested in signing Middlesbrough defender Daniel Ayala, but that Boro boss Jonathan Woodgate is desperate to keep the Spanish ace and is set to offer him a new deal.
Earlier this week, football website TeamTalk have claimed that Leeds, Fulham and Stoke City are all interested in signing the 29-year-old defender. His contract expires at the end of the season, meaning he could be a bargain buy in January.
The previous report claimed that Middlesbrough could not afford to offer Ayala a new deal, meaning they may have to be prepared to cash in after Christmas. But the new report from the Northern Echo has claimed that is not the case.
Indeed, they claim Leeds are interested in landing Ayala – more so than Stoke and Fulham. But the report also states that Middlesbrough are desperate to keep Ayala, and are preparing an offer of a new deal to keep him at the Riverside.
TBR’s view – Not liked by Leeds fans, but he would be an excellent signing
Ayala is hardly the most-loved player among Leeds fans but Whites supporters have got to put that aside. Adding cover to Marcelo Bielsa’s side at centre-back is absolutely crucial and Ayala is the perfect addition.
Leeds had to sell Pontus Jansson for Financial Fairplay reasons in the summer. With Ayala likely to be available on the cheap, his signing would be beneficial towards FFP – while Ayala would replace the aerial prowess Jansson previously provided.
He needs to be signed.
