Leeds United recently had Joe Gelhardt at Elland Road for talks, as the Whites look to win the race for the Wigan Athletic striker, according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (26/7; page 63).

Gelhardt appears to be attracting plenty of attention following Wigan’s fall into administration. The Sun recently claimed that the Whites were battling a host of clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic and Everton, for his signature.

But it appears that Marcelo Bielsa’s side may perhaps be in the driving seat as things stand.

The report also noted that Leeds may agree to loan the 18-year-old out to help get a move across the line.

TBR View: Huge coup for Leeds if Gelhardt joins

Gelhardt has not yet managed to force his way into Paul Cook’s starting lineup on a consistent basis. But he has made 18 appearances in the Championship this term.

The list of clubs reportedly chasing his signature says a lot about his potential. So it would be a huge coup for Leeds to win the race.

But the Elland Road faithful may be optimistic that the club can get a move for Gelhardt done. The Whites have a number of incredibly exciting prospects coming through, and Marcelo Bielsa has shown that he is not afraid to give them a chance in the first-team.

It may not be a move that particularly benefits Leeds in their first season back in the Premier League. But it could prove to be a fantastic piece of business in the years to come should the Whites capitalise on their current position in the race.
