Report: Jermain Defoe makes decision over his Rangers future

Glasgow Rangers striker Jermain Defoe has reportedly decided to stay at Ibrox for one more season, according to Sky Sports.

The outlet claims that the 38-year-old would like the opportunity to play in front of fans at Ibrox before he finishes playing for the club.

Defoe joined Rangers in 2019, first on loan before signing permanently the following year, but his contract expires at the end of the season as things stand.

Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard told reporters earlier this week that the club has opened talks with Defoe.

However, the boss stresses that the striker is being given all the time he needs to decide on his future.

“It goes without saying that Jermain Defoe is someone I have the ultimate respect and admiration for,” the Rangers boss is quoted by The Scotsman as saying.

“He’s been a wonderful player. He’s had a wonderful career.

“To get him up here in the first place was something I was keen to do, because I knew he would help the group in the way he goes about his business. He’s a top professional.

“We’re in talks with Jermain at the moment about what’s next for Jermain. But we want to be really respectful, we want to give him the time to make his own decisions.

“I think he’s at a stage in his life where we’ll listen to Jermain and see what he wants to do moving forward.

“We’ll go from there. I don’t think it’s right for me to divulge right now what’s been said from my point of view and from his.

“But we’ll certainly respect Jermain in terms of his own decisions moving forward.”

Defoe is a top player who offers so much to Rangers both on and off the pitch, and if this report is true, then it’s great news for the Ibrox camp.

Rangers’ long-awaited 55th title will hopefully only be the beginning of a return to the glory years, and a player like Defoe would be crucial in the dressing room to help this come to fruition.
