Sky Sports have claimed that Mainz midfielder Jean Philippe Gbamin is undergoing an Everton medical on Friday, ahead of a proposed move to Goodison Park this summer.
Everton have identified the 23-year-old holding midfielder as a replacement for Idrissa Gueye, who finally got his move to Paris Saint-Germain following Adrien Rabiot’s departure and move to Juventus.
A five-time Ivory Coast international, Gbamin has spent three seasons at Mainz after joining the club from French club RC Lens in the summer of 2016. He has played 98 times for Lens, and 95 for Mainz.
With almost 200 club games under his belt at such a young age, it is unsurprising that Gbamin has already become a fully-fledged international and set to move to the Premier League.
It remains to be seen if a fee has been agreed between Everton and Mainz, with The Toffees previously having a £23million rejected. Mainz are said to be holding out for a figure closer to the £27.5million mark.
TBR’s view – Gbamin arrival surely set to see Everton trio leave
Despite bringing in Andre Gomes from Barcelona on a permanent basis and Fabian Delph from Manchester City, Everton still need additions in the middle of the park.
That is because James McCarthy is expected to leave the club this summer, with Newcastle being linked with a £5million move. Mo Besic went out on loan last summer and he could also leave the club.
Morgan Schneiderlin was in the senior side in phases last term, but the former Manchester United man could also be sold with six days left before English teams are barred from bringing any more players in.
