Japhet Tanganga was weighing up pursuing a move away from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

Tanganga has shown signs of being a potential revelation during the early stages of Jose Mourinho’s tenure.

The 20-year-old has made two Premier League appearances under the Portuguese, while he also featured in the FA Cup replay against Middlesbrough.

Tanganga’s versatility has been particularly impressive. The centre-back has featured in both full-back roles in the top flight. And he has impressed in both positions so far.

It now looks as though the youngster has every chance of becoming an important player in Mourinho’s plans. But it appears that Tanganga’s season could have played out significantly differently had he made a different decision in the summer.

The Daily Mail reports that the academy graduate was considering leaving the club before the start of the season. It is suggested that he had interest from a number of lower league clubs.

TBR View – Tanganga rewarded for gamble

You could certainly understand why the defender may have been tempted to move elsewhere last summer.

He turned 20 before the end of last season and was still awaiting his first-team debut for the club. So he would be forgiven for wondering if that chance was ever going to come.

But Tanganga has now been rewarded for taking a gamble and staying.

Spurs fans will be wary of putting too much pressure on him given that he has still only made a handful of senior appearances.

But the early signs are incredibly positive. So Tottenham will be incredibly relieved that he went nowhere when the chance presented itself.
