Jan Vertonghen is keen to discuss a new contract with Tottenham Hotspur, but talks are yet to begin with the club over a new deal, according to a report from Sky Sports.

Vertonghen is one of the players who is out of contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer. He has been an outstanding servant for Spurs, but it appears that a large question mark hangs over his future.

Sky Sports reports that he is free to talk to foreign clubs in January – with Roma and Bayer Leverkusen keen – but the centre-back is open to extending his stay in the Premier League.

According to Sky Sports, the 32-year-old is interested in signing fresh terms at Tottenham following Jose Mourinho’s arrival. It is suggested that talks are yet to begin.

Sky Sports adds that Vertonghen was open to discussions while Mauricio Pochettino was still in charge.

TBR View – Keeping Vertonghen could be shrewd move

While Vertonghen still has to prove that he can rediscover his previous form, it would arguably be a boost for Tottenham to agree a new deal.

He can still be an important member of the squad, even in a less prominent role. And keeping him around may leave Mourinho one less issue to address next summer.

It will be interesting to see whether Tottenham do open talks with Vertonghen in the near future. It may not be a straightforward choice – even with the Belgian reportedly keen to stay.
